Sungkyunkwan Scandal Special Edition OST

Sungkyunkwan Scandal Special Edition Original Soundtrack (OST), published in April 2012 and distributed by Warner Music Korea, comes in a fold out CD case with two CDs, a photobook and five photo cards.

The soundtrack is from Sungkyunkwan Scandal, a South Korean fusion Joseon historical drama staring the four protagonists known as Jalgeum Quartet*

Sungkyunkwan Scandal is based on The Lives of Sungkyunkwan Confucian Scholars, a bestselling novel in Korea in 2007, written by Jung Eun-gwol.

First CD comes with the 13 songs that were originally released on the soundtrack in September 2010, while the second CD contains seven formerly unreleased tracks.

The fold out CD case is tucked into a cardboard slip cover which has the Jalgeum Quartet dressed in their blue and white Sungkyunkwan school uniforms underneath the Korean name of the drama 성균관 스캔들 on the front and the tracklisting written in Korean on the back. The total dimensions are 14.1cm x 19.1cm x 2.3cm.

Once you pull the slip cover off you are left with fold out case which has the front and back identical to the slip cover. The inside covers feature the close-up of the four students dressed in the same Hanbok uniforms.

 

Once completely spread out the outermost left page has a 20 page photo book attached to it with high-quality glossy photographs of the four main characters, mainly Yoochun’s Lee Sun-joon. The last 7 pages contain lyrics written in Korean using Hangul, but there are no English lyrics nor Romanized lyrics. The two middle pages consist of the CDs in transparent plastic holders, while the photo cards are tucked into the right side.

The five polaroid photo cards, which come inserted into the slit on the right side, are randomly chosen from 8 possible HD photographs from filming Sungkyunkwan Scandal drama.

The original soundtrack sold 110,000 copies in just a few weeks and it features Kim Junsu and Kim Jaejoong, who are Park Yoochun’s bandmates from JYJ. The trio sings Sungkyunkwan Scandal’s opening theme ‘Found You’ (찾았다) together. They performed it on December 31, 2010 during the KBS Drama Awards where Park Yoochun, aside from performing the song, also won Netizens’ Award, Best New Actor, and the best Couple Award with Park Min-young. That performance was also significant for JYJ and their fans because it was the first tv performance publicly broadcasted since they left SM Entertainment in 2009.

All in all, it is a real beautifully packaged soundtrack with wonderful extras that don’t raise the price of the whole package much at all. The usual price you will pay if you want to get this Sungkyunkwan Scandal Special Edition OST is around $20, although I got this one for free, with a voucher I won from Kpoptown’s unboxing contest.
